The Rotation: Gingerella’s “Chip Shop Romance”

There’s something instantly likable about Gingerella’s “Chip Shop Romance.” It feels loose in the right places, melodic without being too polished, and full of the kind of small details that make a song feel like it already has a life outside the recording. The London band has a knack for pairing classic British indie instincts with a little theatricality, and this one lands somewhere between scruffy guitar pop and a scene from a slightly chaotic rom-com.

The charm is really in how effortless it feels. “Chip Shop Romance” doesn’t need a huge chorus or overly glossy production to stick. Instead, it leans on personality, melody and that slightly nostalgic feeling of stumbling into a song that sounds familiar without actually feeling derivative. It’s playful, a little cinematic, and easy to imagine playing late at night with the windows cracked.

That sensibility lines up with the world Gingerella has been building since forming in London in 2021. The band — Tommy Adamson, Noah Charlton, Simon Pattyn and Ed Myers — describes its sound through the lens of indie rock and classic British pop songwriting, with glam and music-hall influences around the edges.

“Chip Shop Romance” is also the first single from the band’s upcoming five-track EP of the same name, due this November. The project was produced by Brendan Lynch and mastered by John Webber at AIR Studios, with more music still on the way ahead of the full release.

For now, “Chip Shop Romance” is staying firmly in the rotation.
