In Rotation: Tiger La Flor — “HOLLYWOODLAND”
Tiger La Flor turns Los Angeles into a lost film reel on “HOLLYWOODLAND,” the title track from her five-song EP, released August 21 via Arista Records. The song sits somewhere between vintage California romance and the reality underneath it, pairing warm harmonies, sun-faded western guitars and lush orchestral touches with writing that keeps the whole thing from drifting too far into fantasy.
La Flor describes the sound of the project as “Laurel Canyon Western,” which honestly feels like the perfect way to put it. There’s a softness to the arrangement, but it still has weight. The EP pulls from Old Hollywood, classic country and the glow of ’60s and ’70s records, with live orchestral elements and drums cut to tape giving everything a slightly worn-in, cinematic texture.
What makes “HOLLYWOODLAND” especially compelling is the way it romanticizes Los Angeles without pretending the city is uncomplicated. La Flor built the project around the question of what she actually found romantic about L.A. after moving back from Paris, eventually landing on a version of the city viewed through old films, Highway 1 drives, vintage sunglasses and the kind of golden-hour nostalgia that almost feels too perfect to be real.
That tension runs through the song beautifully. The production feels glamorous and expansive, while the lyrics bring in the less polished side of romance and dating in Los Angeles. It gives the track this slightly bittersweet quality, like the dream and the disappointment are happening at the same time.
There’s also a really clear visual language around the release. La Flor researched fashion from the era, built chronological playlists and shot visuals on 16mm film, all in service of making the project feel like it belonged to its own world.
And that world feels fully realized here. “HOLLYWOODLAND” is cinematic without feeling overdone, nostalgic without becoming costume-y, and polished without losing the personality underneath it.
It’s the kind of track that feels best played loud, somewhere around sunset.
