In Rotation: Loring — “Weightless”

Loring make the kind of indie pop that feels like it exists somewhere between motion and memory.

The San Diego duo, made up of best friends Harrison Ballard and Houston Clifton, write, produce, and mix everything themselves from a home studio, and that closeness comes through on “Weightless.” The song is built around driving synths, punchy guitars, and textured pads, but underneath all of that movement is something much more internal: the feeling of being overwhelmed by an emotion before you are ready to deal with it.

There is a haziness to “Weightless” that works in its favor. The production feels big without becoming glossy, and the synths give the track this slightly suspended quality, like everything is moving around you while you are trying to stay still. It is nostalgic in a way that immediately made us think of The Blue Nile, but Loring never sound like they are trying to recreate someone else’s record. The guitars give it enough bite to keep the song from drifting too far, while the softer textures leave plenty of room for the emotion underneath.

For Loring, that emotional release is tied closely to the water. The chorus draws from the duo’s habit of turning to surfing when something feels too intense to process head-on. As they explain, sometimes an experience is simply “too intense to immediately face and begin to process.”

That idea is what makes “Weightless” land beyond the production. It is not really a song about escaping a feeling forever. It is about the strange middle ground where you know something is there, but you need somewhere else to put yourself before you can look at it clearly.

That perspective also feels central to the way Loring write. Rather than spelling out every detail, they are interested in the smaller emotional shifts around an experience: the moments that are instantly recognizable even when they are hard to explain.

“Weightless” feels expansive, restless, and strangely calming at the same time. It is the kind of track that gets better when you let it fill the room.
