In The Rotation: Gianna Mae — “Boy with a Bike”

Gianna Mae has been on our radar for a minute now, and every new release seems to make her world feel a little sharper.

With “Boy with a Bike,” she leans all the way into the loud, reckless side of pop-rock. The track is built on live drums, distorted guitars and gritty vocals, giving it the kind of energy that feels immediate from the first few seconds.

The premise is just as fun. Gianna wrote the song around wanting someone to be as obsessed with her as a biker is with his motorcycle, turning that idea into something playful, chaotic and completely committed to the bit. There is even a Fast and Furious influence behind the concept, only with motorcycles in place of cars.

What we continue to like about Gianna is how much personality she lets into her music. Her songs do not feel afraid of being a little dramatic, a little messy or a little over the top, and that is exactly what makes them work. “Boy with a Bike” has attitude, but it also feels like another step toward a sound that is becoming increasingly easy to recognize as hers.

Originally from Chicago and now based in Nashville, Gianna’s music pulls from pop-rock and alternative rock while keeping everything rooted in a distinctly feminine point of view. Her writing circles attraction, confidence, heartbreak and impulsive decisions, and “Boy with a Bike” fits right into that world.

We have featured Gianna before, and this release only makes us more interested in where she takes things next. She is the kind of artist who knows how to make a song feel fun without losing the point of view behind it.
