Kacey Musgraves Brings a Little Piece of Texas to Phoenix on the Middle of Nowhere Tour
From a glowing campfire atmosphere to a butterfly floating above the crowd, Kacey Musgraves turned an arena into something that felt a lot like home.
On October 17, Musgraves brought her Middle of Nowhere Tour to Phoenix, delivering a night that felt less like an arena show and more like an intimate evening somewhere in her home state of Texas.
At one point, she told the crowd that Phoenix had been a non-negotiable stop on the tour. She had specifically insisted on bringing the show here. Later, she spoke about bringing her own little middle of nowhere to Arizona.
And that's exactly what she did.
Gabriella Rose Sets the Tone
Before Kacey took the stage, Gabriella Rose delivered a beautiful opening set that felt perfectly suited to the evening. Her warm vocals and understated stage presence made for an intimate introduction to the night, giving the crowd a chance to settle into the atmosphere before the main event.
One of our favorite moments was her cover of Mazzy Star's “Fade Into You.” Dreamy, delicate, and beautifully performed, it was the kind of cover that makes you stop and really listen.
Rose was a wonderful choice to open the show, and we're excited to keep following her music.
A Little Bit of Texas in the Desert
Everything about Kacey's production felt intentional. The rotating stage gave the performance an intimate, almost in-the-round quality, while the use of fire brought a warmth that made parts of the show feel like gathering around a campfire.
There was a certain simplicity to it all, even with the scale of the production. Nothing felt unnecessarily flashy. Every visual seemed to belong to the music.
One of the night's most beautiful moments came during “Butterflies,” when an illuminated butterfly drone floated above the crowd. It was whimsical, a little surreal, and perfectly suited to a song that has always felt like pure magic.
And then there were the outfits. Effortlessly cute, distinctly Kacey, and another reminder that she understands how to create an entire world around her music without losing the person at the center of it.
From a Rhinestone Banjo to the Middle of Nowhere
For us at Everyday Jams, this show carried a little extra nostalgia.
The first time we saw Kacey Musgraves was back in March 2014, when she opened for Lady Antebellum at Ak-Chin Pavilion in Phoenix on the Take Me Downtown Tour. She was playing a rhinestone-covered banjo, and we remember being completely taken by her.
We've followed her music ever since.
More than twelve years later, watching her command an arena while maintaining that same genuine charm felt pretty special.
Hearing “Merry Go 'Round,” her debut single from Same Trailer Different Park, brought us right back to those early days. It's one of those songs that never loses its impact, no matter how many times you've heard it.
The Golden Hour selections were equally memorable. Hearing “Golden Hour,” “Slow Burn,” and “Butterflies” live again was a reminder of just how timeless that record has become. Those songs have a way of making a massive room feel incredibly personal.
And through every era, one thing has remained consistent: her voice.
Kacey has one of the clearest, most effortlessly beautiful live vocals we've heard. There's no need for vocal theatrics or overcomplication. She simply sings, and it's stunning.
A Setlist Worth Remembering
The Middle of Nowhere material translated beautifully to the stage, bringing even more personality to an already impeccable setlist.
Songs like “Uncertain, TX” highlighted the Spanish and Tex-Mex influences woven into the new record. The sound feels like a love letter to Texas, embracing its musical traditions and the cultures that make the state so distinctive.
The album's “String Guitar” is another favorite from this chapter, with the kind of warm, rootsy character that fits so naturally into the world Musgraves has created.
Hearing those influences alongside songs from her earlier albums made the show feel like a celebration of where she came from and everything she's become.
One of the night's biggest surprises was Kacey’s gorgeous cover of Selena's “I Could Fall in Love.” It felt like a particularly special moment for the Phoenix crowd, bringing another layer of Texas musical history into an already heartfelt evening. Her vocals were absolutely stunning, and hearing her take on such an iconic song was easily one of our favorite moments of the night. It was the kind of unexpected performance that makes a concert feel truly one of a kind.
The night also included a cover of George Strait's “All My Ex's Live in Texas,” adding another playful nod to her roots.
By the end, we were half-convinced we needed to book a trip to Texas ourselves.
There's Nobody Quite Like Kacey
What makes Kacey Musgraves such a remarkable performer isn't just her voice, her songwriting, or even the gorgeous production surrounding her.
It's how naturally everything comes together.
She can make you laugh, break your heart with a lyric, and have an entire arena singing along within the same set. There's an ease to the way she performs that never feels rehearsed, even when every detail of the show has clearly been considered.
She's a class act in every sense, and watching her live only reinforces what we've felt since that first show in 2014: there truly is nobody who does it quite like Kacey Musgraves.
The Middle of Nowhere Tour gave Phoenix a little piece of Texas for the night, and somehow made an arena feel like home.
