SYTË Finds Connection in Curiosity on "What's Ur Sign?"
The New York duo discusses astrology as an icebreaker, embracing weird girl charm, and why authenticity beats performance every time.
For most people, "What's your sign?" is a harmless conversation starter. For SYTË, it's something much more revealing.
The New York-based duo, comprised of vocalist Nita Kaja and producer Drin Tashi, have built their music around human connection in all its messy, unexpected forms. Their latest single, "What's Ur Sign?", takes one of the most familiar questions imaginable and turns it into a reflection on curiosity, identity, and the ways we attempt to understand one another.
Their story itself is rooted in connection. Born from a chance meeting in Prishtina, Kosovo, the project began when New York City native Nita Kaja met Kosovo-born producer Drin Tashi on a summer night that would ultimately change both of their lives. Years later, the duo continues to create together from their bedroom studio in New York City, blending their contrasting personalities into a sound that feels both artful and undeniably catchy.
As they release "What's Ur Sign?", SYTË continues to prove that some of their strongest songs come from life's simplest moments.
More Than An Icebreaker
When speaking with Everyday Jams, Kaja explained that asking someone their sign has long been her preferred way to start a conversation.
"Literally every new person I meet gets asked 'What's your sign?' within like five minutes of speaking," she shared.
For Kaja, the question isn't really about astrology itself. Instead, it's become a pulse check — a way of understanding how willing someone is to engage with curiosity and connection. The reaction often tells her more than the answer.
That idea ultimately became the foundation for the song.
While "What's Ur Sign?" feels playful on the surface, Kaja explained that she was interested in exploring something deeper: the way people attempt to categorize themselves and others through labels, assumptions, and first impressions. She believes people are far more complex than any sign, stereotype, or surface-level identifier could ever capture.
Celebrating Weird Girl Charm
One of the most compelling aspects of the track is its subtle rejection of the performance-driven relationship advice that has become impossible to avoid online.
During our conversation, Kaja reflected on the flood of "courtship optimization" content she had been seeing across social media while writing the song. Rather than embracing those calculated approaches to attraction, she found herself reflecting on her own relationship with Tashi and the fact that it was built on authenticity rather than strategy.
"I was so clumsy and obnoxious and I'd dress kind of ugly; but I was fiercely present and purely myself," she explained.
That honesty became a guiding principle for the song.
Instead of teaching listeners how to become more desirable, "What's Ur Sign?" celebrates individuality, awkwardness, and the qualities that make people memorable in the first place. It's a refreshing reminder that genuine connection often happens when we're least concerned with performing for someone else's approval.
A Song That Arrived Quickly
Not every song takes years to perfect.
When asked about the writing process behind "What's Ur Sign?", Kaja laughed while explaining that this one came together surprisingly fast.
"So quick. Very linear, A to B timeline," she said.
That sense of spontaneity can be felt throughout the track. There's a confidence and ease to the song that mirrors the effortless nature of the conversations that inspired it. Nothing feels overworked. Instead, the song moves with the natural rhythm of two people getting to know one another.
It's a reminder that sometimes the strongest ideas arrive exactly as they're meant to.
Built Between Two Creative Worlds
Part of what makes SYTË's music feel so distinct is the balance between Kaja and Tashi's individual strengths.
When discussing their creative process, Kaja described a partnership that has evolved significantly over time. While Tashi initially handled much of the instrumentation and production and Kaja focused on vocals and lyrics, those lines have gradually blurred as they've grown together as artists.
That creative trust continues to shape everything they make.
It's also what allows SYTË to move freely between sounds and influences without feeling confined by expectations. Their catalog has never fit neatly into one genre, and Kaja made it clear that isn't changing anytime soon.
"If you really like the sounds of 'What's Ur Sign?', enjoy my dear," she joked. "The next one probably won't sound like this."
New York City Remains The Heartbeat
Although SYTË's story stretches between countries and continents, New York City remains central to their creative identity.
When asked how the city continues to influence their music, Kaja spoke passionately about the inspiration that comes from simply existing within it. The people, the spontaneity, the late nights, and the constant exchange of cultures all become material for future songs.
According to Kaja, summer in New York is when the duo feels most creatively energized.
The city's unpredictability mirrors their approach to songwriting. You can't force the best moments. You have to remain open enough to let them happen.
That openness continues to guide SYTË as they move into this latest chapter.
Looking Ahead
When reflecting on what excites her most about this era of SYTË, Kaja offered one of the most memorable answers of the conversation.
"To put it broadly, it feels like we finally found out what clothes look best on us."
It's a fitting description for a duo that appears increasingly confident in its identity while remaining completely unwilling to limit where the music can go next.
With "What's Ur Sign?", SYTË delivers a song that feels playful, self-aware, and effortlessly charming. More importantly, it captures something many modern pop songs overlook: the beauty of genuine curiosity.
Sometimes all it takes is a simple question.
