Misty Blue Finds Its Way Back to First Love on “Crushed”

The Toronto five-piece talks teenage heartbreak, finding their sound onstage, and the nostalgia behind their next chapter.

Released September 24, “Crushed” marks the Toronto indie band's first studio release since 2024. With dreamy acoustic guitars, layered harmonies, and a sound somewhere between '70s folk rock and '90s dream pop. The song revisits the kind of first love that feels like everything when you're young, even when it's making you miserable.

In conversation with Everyday Jams, the band shared that the song began with a voice note from their guitarist. A few chords were enough to bring back memories of high school, prom, and a relationship that never seemed to work at the right time.

“I really took myself back to high school, thinking about my first love and the first time I ever felt what you could actually call love,” they shared. “I wanted to capture that feeling of having such intense emotions for someone while also feeling completely helpless.”

That emotional back-and-forth is built into the song itself. The chorus moves between higher and lower vocal registers, reflecting the uncertainty of a relationship that offers just enough hope to keep someone hanging on.

But there's an unexpected ending to the story behind “Crushed.” Fifteen years after that first relationship, the two found their way back to each other.

“He may have been that high school asshole, but my intuition was always right. LOL.”

It's a detail that makes the song even more interesting. What sounds like a familiar story of teenage heartbreak is also a look back at something that wasn't quite finished.

Finding the Sound of Misty Blue

Although “Crushed” is their first studio release in two years, Misty Blue hasn't been sitting still. The five-piece has spent that time writing, performing, becoming closer friends, and figuring out what kind of band they want to be.

Their influences are easy to trace, from the harmonies of Fleetwood Mac to the melancholy of The Cranberries, but their connection to those artists goes beyond the records.

“People were SO present back then. There were no phones, and I yearn for that kind of connection,” the band explained. “The bands felt raw and real, like you were actually getting to see THEM.”

That feeling has become central to Misty Blue's own live shows. Having performed at events including NXNE, CNE, Tall Pines, and Revelree, the band treats the stage as more than somewhere to play finished songs. It's where the music takes shape.

“We're a live band first, so when we're recording, we're always asking ourselves how a song will resonate in a live setting.”

New material often goes through several versions in front of an audience before making it into the studio. The goal isn't to polish away every imperfection, but to capture the energy that makes their shows feel personal.

That same care extends to their visual identity. Even their outfits are coordinated through group-chat moodboards, although individuality remains part of the appeal.

“We each have our own personality and look, but it all fits into the world we're creating as a band.”

What Comes After “Crushed”

For a self-managed, independently funded band, every release matters. Misty Blue is approaching this next chapter with more patience than in their earlier years, writing more songs, testing them live, and being selective about what makes the final cut.

“Crushed” is the first step toward their debut EP, now planned for early 2027, with more singles expected along the way.

The band says the project will lean further into nostalgia while keeping the instrumentation raw and unmistakably human.

“I'm also really excited for people to hear the raw instrumentation with the full band,” they shared. “In a world that's becoming increasingly AI driven, I think there's something really special about raw, human music.”

It's an approach that fits a group whose biggest priority has always been connection, whether that's five friends laughing together onstage or a room full of strangers singing the same words.

And ultimately, that's what Misty Blue hopes listeners take away from “Crushed.”

“I want to build a community of people who are just there to be human and feel things deeply.”

With “Crushed,” Misty Blue isn't simply revisiting the past. They're taking everything they've learned from it and bringing it into the music they're making now.

“Crushed” is out now. Listen to the single and follow @mistyblueband for more music ahead of their debut EP.
