Inside justineisdreaming’s Newest Chapter

There is a softness to justineisdreaming’s newest music that feels easy to fall into.

On “Hummingbird” and “Just a Little,” she leans further into R&B and soul without losing the alternative edge that has always sat underneath her work. The songs feel warm, playful and a little more open ended, like she is testing out a new space without rushing to define it.

For Justine, that freedom is the point.

“I’ve mainly just learned that I like to be in different lanes,” she tells Everyday Jams. “I don’t want to ever restrict myself in one lane as an artist.”

Two Songs That Found Each Other

“Hummingbird” and “Just a Little” were not originally planned as a pair.

Justine and longtime collaborator mebabeats made “Just a Little” first, following a sound that felt different from what they had done before. They were not even sure they wanted to release it at first, but decided to keep pushing further into that direction.

That experimentation eventually led to “Hummingbird.”

“We felt that these two naturally belonged together and decided to release both as a pair to show all the different sounds we’re capable of,” Justine says.

That range is part of what makes the release work. Both songs move closer toward R&B and soul, but Justine is not leaving indie or alternative music behind.

“I really want to explore more of the R&B and soul sound, but I’m still heavily into alternative/indie sounds,” she explains. “Blending them together is probably the direction that we’re trying to take it next.”

“Hummingbird” went through its own transformation before landing there too. It originally had a slower feel before the pair remixed it, sped it up, changed the drums and added more synths, eventually finding the version that felt right.

Keeping It Soft

Even as the production starts moving in new directions, Justine wants one thing to stay at the center of her music: vulnerability.

“I think when it sounds natural and when I let myself get really into the emotions behind the lyrics is when my vocals sound the best,” she says.

When asked what she wants to carry with her as her sound continues to change, her answer was simple: “Carrying a soft and vulnerable sound.”

That comes through on both tracks. Neither song feels overworked. The vocals stay close and expressive, while the production gives them enough room to breathe.

Her writing tends to begin in a similar way. Most of the time, a melody comes first and the lyrics follow naturally, whether they are connected to something real or simply arrive in the moment.

Building the World Around “Hummingbird”

The visual side of “Hummingbird” brings out another part of Justine entirely.

Its karaoke inspired video came from something she had wanted to make for a while. Karaoke was part of her childhood with family, and it is still something she does with friends now, so she leaned all the way into the slightly staged, dramatic feeling of those old sing along videos.

“I always love the style of the videos,” she says. “So I tried to do things that leaned into that ‘staged’ and ‘dramatic’ karaoke feel.”

That willingness to pull inspiration from different places feels central to justineisdreaming as an artist.

Music, visuals, fashion and whatever she happens to be watching can all end up feeding into the next idea. Recently, that has included slice of life anime and Peach Girl, particularly its fashion and emotional themes.

It is another reason staying in one lane never seemed like the goal.

The Beginning of Something New

Justine describes “Hummingbird” and “Just a Little” as “definitely the beginning of something new” and a way to show more sides of herself.

That next stretch already seems to be taking shape.

She wants to explore more upbeat, soulful R&B sounds and is also looking ahead toward an EP, with plans to build a larger theme and story around it.

We’ve been loving every release justineisdreaming has put out, and this pair only makes us more excited to see where she goes next. There’s a real sense of curiosity in the way she approaches each song, and that willingness to keep stretching her sound is exactly why she feels like an artist to watch.

For now, “Hummingbird” and “Just a Little” feel like a strong introduction to this next chapter without giving everything away at once.
