Ahead of his debut EP, Dom Malin reflects on writing through uncertainty, building a community, and why hope has always been part of the story.
Across five songs, Dom Malin doesn't try to offer easy answers or wrap difficult emotions in neat conclusions. Instead, his debut EP creates space for uncertainty, grief, self doubt, and healing to exist together. It's an honest body of work that feels deeply personal while leaving enough room for listeners to discover their own stories inside it.
After years of steadily building a loyal community through live shows and releases, Echoes of Light feels like a natural next chapter. We caught up with Dom ahead of the EP's release to talk about writing with honesty, the conversations his music has sparked, and why hope quietly runs through everything he creates.
Music that reminds people they aren't alone
Although the songs began from Dom's own experiences, the biggest surprise has been discovering just how many people saw themselves reflected back through them.
When asked what Echoes of Light taught him about himself, his answer wasn't about songwriting at all.
"How many people suffer in silence. I've had so many incredible messages from people opening up and telling me the songs have been a comfort, a reminder, and a place of solace."
For Dom, that's become the heart of the project.
"I think it's a beautiful feeling to know we aren't alone, and that music is never transactional, and that it'll always be there when you need it and doesn't ask for anything in return."
That compassion sits at the center of every song. Rather than writing from a place of hopelessness, Echoes of Light gently reminds listeners that someone else has stood where they are before.
The song that started the conversation
The EP's focus track, 7 AM, grew out of a period when Dom found himself questioning whether the life he was living still belonged to him.
Working a job that left him mentally exhausted, the song became a reflection of feeling trapped inside routine while quietly longing for something different.
He knew early on the song would speak to more than just his own story.
"It came from my own experience of feeling stuck in the routine of life, where it felt like nothing I was doing had any meaning and every day was just repeating itself."
That honesty shaped every lyric.
"I knew the lyrics had to be purposeful while still feeling relatable. I see every line as pointing towards something true, asking the questions we need to ask ourselves if we're going to overcome those feelings."
It's what makes 7 AM feel so immediate. Rather than dramatizing difficult emotions, Dom simply gives them a voice.
Choosing hope without ignoring the weight
One of the most compelling things about Echoes of Light is the way it refuses to stay in darkness.
The songs acknowledge pain without allowing it to become the final destination.
According to Dom, that balance was intentional from the very beginning.
"These themes are heavy. They open you up and remind you of suffering. But I'm also a believer in recognising our own strength to overcome what we face."
Even the title points toward something beyond struggle.
"Each song, and even the title of the EP, suggests this isn't the end but the beginning. It's about renewal and a way forward. Life is still yours to live."
That sense of forward motion quietly ties the entire project together.
A community that helped build the record
While Echoes of Light marks Dom's debut EP, it doesn't feel like the beginning of his story.
Years of touring, independent releases, and genuine connection with listeners created the foundation long before these songs arrived.
For Dom, releasing a full body of work only felt right once there were people waiting to experience it alongside him.
"Having people to share this moment with is what makes it so special."
He continues,
"Seeing the support from start to finish has been incredibly special."
That relationship with his audience has also influenced the way he thinks about live performance.
Whether he's opening for artists like Dermot Kennedy, Hazlett, and Paris Paloma or playing intimate headline shows, one thing has remained constant.
"I write songs to fill stadiums but speak to the listener as though it's only ever them and me."
It's a simple sentence that perfectly captures Dom's songwriting. No matter how big the room becomes, the songs never lose their closeness.
Finding strength through honesty
Throughout our conversation, one theme kept resurfacing.
Honesty.
Not honesty for the sake of confession, but honesty as a way of helping someone else feel understood.
When asked what he hopes listeners carry with them after hearing the EP, Dom offered an answer that feels like the mission statement for Echoes of Light.
"I want people to feel like they're not alone in the quiet suffering of depression, self doubt, loss or pain."
He continues,
"If someone reaches the end of the EP feeling even slightly less alone than they did before pressing play, then it's done exactly what I hoped it would."
It's a beautiful way to think about music.
Not as something that solves every problem, but as something willing to sit beside you while you figure things out.
That's exactly what Echoes of Light does.
