Album Review: CASANDRA's ISLA TRANQUILITA Rewards Listeners From Start to Finish
Expanding on the EP CASANDRA released earlier this year, her debut full-length album doesn't simply add seven new songs. It completes the story. Across 13 tracks, she effortlessly blends alt-pop, R&B, Cuban soul, and indie electronic influences into a record that feels cohesive, immersive, and deeply personal from beginning to end.
The album opens with "Truth Serum," a song we couldn't stop returning to after hearing it on the original EP. Beginning with delicate piano before unfolding into warm percussion and a subtle jazzy groove, it's the kind of song that instantly sets the tone. There's an unmistakable island warmth running through the production, while CASANDRA's vocals sit beautifully within the instrumentation, never overpowering the moment but becoming part of it. It's the kind of track you'd hope to hear playing at a cool wine bar before immediately reaching for your phone to see who's singing.
The newly added songs feel less like bonus tracks and more like the missing pieces that complete the album.
"MUÑEQUITA" opens the second half with remarkable grace. Sung entirely in Spanish, the song moves patiently, allowing every melody to linger. Even without understanding every lyric, the emotion comes through effortlessly. CASANDRA's softer vocal delivery feels delicate without ever losing its confidence, making it one of the album's most beautiful moments.
That calm atmosphere carries into "FELL FROM A TREE THEY SAID," one of the strongest additions to the record. Blending English and Spanish over dreamy indie production, the song feels weightless while still carrying emotional depth. Lyrics like, "What kind of feeling buried in my chest? Only in secret language. In my bed, visions so lucid. Fell from a tree they said," linger long after the song ends, making it one of those tracks that reveals something new with every listen.
Then comes "HOURGLASS," a song we've already had the pleasure of featuring at Everyday Jams. It remains one of the album's standout moments. Warm, intimate, and endlessly replayable, it captures everything that makes CASANDRA's songwriting so compelling. Lines like, "Wonder if you're mine always, not just this time... can it always be so effortlessly tucked away?" feel beautifully understated, allowing the emotion to speak for itself.
"BUENA SUERTE" slows everything down once again, but never loses momentum. Here, CASANDRA's vocals sit slightly higher in the mix, giving the song an even greater emotional presence. As she sings, "What did I tell myself to keep me going? I am stronger than I might have thought," the song quietly transforms into one of the album's most empowering moments.
One of the record's most cinematic moments arrives with "SUMMON FIRE." Gentle ocean waves quietly introduce the track before the production slowly unfolds beneath them. It immediately brings the album's island-inspired atmosphere back into focus, creating a listening experience that feels transportive. This entire record feels like the soundtrack to getting ready with your closest friends before a night out somewhere warm, where the windows are open, everyone is laughing, and no one is watching the clock.
That energy naturally leads into "RESERVED 4 ME," one of the album's most playful moments. There's a confidence running through this track that feels effortless, giving it a cool, danceable energy without ever sacrificing the intimacy that defines the rest of the record. The repeated line, "You're not like anyone," feels simple but instantly memorable.
Closing the album is "TEARPROOF," a song that never rushes toward a conclusion. Instead, it gently leaves the door open. Repeating, "What if I try to compromise... it's just the beginning," CASANDRA ends the record not with certainty, but with possibility. It's a fitting way to close an album centered around healing, identity, and finding peace within uncertainty.
What makes ISLA TRANQUILITA so rewarding i's the way every song feels connected. Nothing exists in isolation. Every transition, every melody, and every moment of stillness contributes to a larger story that unfolds naturally from beginning to end. This is an album you want to listen to from start to finish.
Rather than simply expanding an EP, CASANDRA has created a full-length album that rewards listeners willing to experience it as one complete body of work. It's immersive, beautifully paced, and the kind of record that only grows stronger with every listen.
